Cool Things To Do October 12 & 13

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Many longtime Delmarva traditions are scheduled this weekend. It's the first weekend of fall and people across Sussex County can expect some of their favorite events of the season to begin soon.

A 28-year-old event held on the second full weekend each October is designed to promote western Sussex County’s agriculture takes place on Saturday. Despite its name, the Apple Scrapple Festival in Bridgeville offers many more food options, rides and games.

"We have our crab cakes, our oyster sandwiches," says Executive Director Karen Johnson. "We have funnel cakes, french fries, and of course thousands of apple dumplings and thousands of scrapple sandwiches. There's something for everyone from the ladies skillet toss to our kids apple toss."

Another event is in its 25th year. Greyhounds have been strutting into Rehoboth Beach all week for an event that runs through Sunday. Greyhounds Reach The Beach was first held informally in 1995 but a few leadership changes later and The Grapehound Wine Tour now leads the pack to raise money for Greyhound adoption groups. Greyhounds and their owners can even dress up for a Sunday morning parade on the boardwalk.  Public Relations Sarah Dougherty says vendors will open up at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

"We have about 35 vendors that will be set up in the main convention center," she says. "We have walking tours. We have bus tours."

Meanwhile in Rehoboth, the 14th annual Boardwalk Buddy Walk will bring out over 1500 walkers to raise awareness for Down Syndrome. The walk is free. Click here to register. Registration will also be open on-site starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The walk itself kicks off at 9 a.m.

"We start with the rocky theme and we walk down the boardwalk a little bit, turn around walk back," says Executive Director Michelle Hetherington. "Then after that we have the buddy hop where we have a DJ and everybody dances."

Another event invites people out for a walk in South Bethany. The third annual historic coastal towns cottage tour features 7 of the oldest cottages in town that were built in the 1950's. The tour is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Click here for tickets. Each year a different coastal town is selected. The cottage tours were first held in Ocean View and then in Fenwick Island. Proceeds go towards the creation of a Coastal Town Museum in Ocean View.

"We have a 1901 Gothic house that was given to us and our towns Fenwick, South Bethany, Ocean View, and Millville are all working together to create this museum for our community," says Museum Chair Kimberly Grimes.

Sunday at 3 p.m. the Easterseals Walk With Me 5K and Fun Run will raise money for people of all ages who have disabilities or special needs. For the seventh year people can either walk or run the first nine holes at the Baywood Greens Golf Course. Wheelchairs and strollers are welcome and walkers don't can stop after a few holes if they wish. For those who can't make it, a virtual walk is available so that all participants can donate and get a T-shirt.

"It's not just a walk," says Community Relations Coordinator Linda Forte. She says the event also brings out wildlife from Barnhill Preserve and much more. "Delaware State Police are there with their helicopter and the canines. We have a moon bounce and a lot of activities. After the walk we go up to the ballroom and we have a wonderful meal."
