FELTON, Del.- Delaware State Police say they have charged a Magnolia woman with vehicular assault, stemming from a DUI-related crash.

Troopers were dispatched to a crash in the area of Indian Point and Andrew's Lake road in Felton shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, troopers located a 2000 Chevrolet Lumina several hundred feet into the woods.

Through further investigation, police said they learned that the driver, 53-year-old Mary A. Williams, was traveling at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner when she failed to negotiate a turn, causing the car to exit the roadway and strike several pine trees.

According to police, troopers detected an odor of alcohol on Williams, and a DUI investigation ensued.

Additionally, a computer inquiry revealed that Williams did not have a valid driver's license, police said.

A passenger in the car, a 59-year-old woman from Magnolia, was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital with serious injuries. Williams was not hurt, police said.

Williams was charged with driving a vehicle under the influence of a combination of alcohol and any drug, reckless driving, vehicular assault first-degree driving under the influence, driving without a valid license, failure to remain within a single lane, failure to have insurance identification in possession and driving a vehicle at an unreasonable or imprudent speed.

She was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and was committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women's Correctional Institution on $4,502 secured bond.
