Shields Elementary Visits Lewes Fire Dept. for Fire Prevention Week

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del. - Every year during Fire Prevention Week, Shields Elementary School students visit the Lewes Fire Department. Ms. Smith's second grade class walked down Savannah Road to the fire hall Thursday morning. This campaign is held the week of Oct. 9 every year in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire.

The students learn about the role firefighters play in keeping them safe and how they can help.

"We just try to inform kids on the dangers around their house and if something bad were to happen, how to get to safety or how to help," says Capt. Chris Colpo.

Second grader Kate shares what she learned during Thursday's lesson.

"I would go to the door and see if it was hot," she says. "If it was, I would go to the window and yell 'help.'"

Other lessons include finding a safe meeting place and how to stop, drop, and roll.

President of the Delaware Firefighters Association Jay Jones says that with three children tragically dying in a Long Neck fire back in August, this year it's especially important to stress fire safety to small children throughout Sussex County.

"It's really important in Sussex County with the tragedies that we've had in the last year and in the state of Delaware with the fire deaths," he says. "We're seeing a steady number or slight increase in fire deaths each year."

The fire prevention theme this year is "Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape."

Jones says firefighters will ensure children do home fire drills with their families and that they know where to go in case of an emergency and how to dial 911.

Students like Gunner practice these skills that they hope to one day teach. "I want to be a firefighter and fight fires and help people," he says.

At the end of the lesson, the students are treated with a ride on a fire truck back to school

The Lewes Fire Department will hold an open house at Station 2 on Oct. 22 from 5-9 p.m.
