Wicomico County Extends Burn Ban Due to Dry Conditions

Posted: Updated:

WHITE HEAVEN, Md.- Due to the increasingly dry conditions Wicomico County Executive, Bob Culver, has extended the burn ban through October 15th.

"You've got the winds that come trough, and the leaves are falling. It's not the perfect time for burning," says White Heaven resident Priscila Braun.

Culver first issued the burn ban Oct. 3 with an expiration date set for Oct. 10. However, on Thursday Culver's office announced he has determined on the advice of the Burn Ban Committee that extending the ban is necessary.

WBOC's meteorologist Heidi Werosta says the dry conditions are expected to continue at least until the end of the week.

"Sunday there will be a cold front coming and with that cold front there could be a few scatter showers unfortunately though, it's not gonna be that big soaker that we need.It will help a little bit just not enough," said Werosta.

In the meantime, Wicomico County residents like Hughes Write, believe the safer bet is to not burn anything in their backyard until conditions improve.

"With the wind blowing it to the woods that'd be it... It'd be over by the time the fire department got here," said Write.

Burn ban violations carry a $500 fine per incident, according to the county.

People may call 410-548-4860 to report violations during regular business hours. At other times, people may call the Sheriff’s Office at 410-548-4891.
