Students Spend the School Day at 9-1-1 Awareness Day

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del.- Students were invited Thursday to the 20th annual 9-1-1 Awareness Day at the Sussex County Public Safety Complex, where they learned how serious dialing 9-1-1 is.

"We want them to understand what happens when you call 9-1-1, what we expect as far as the kind of questions and answers," said Joe Thomas, the director of the Sussex County Operations Center.

Instead of a typical school day, students had the opportunity to learn about fire prevention, 9-1-1 protocol, what first responders do on a daily basis and how to administer CPR.

"A lot of people are afraid of the police so it's important for us to get out here and to talk to these children while they are young so they feel comfortable with us," said Delaware State Police Master Cpl. Rickey Hargis.

Emergency vehicles, police cars, police K-9s, fire trucks and EMS units were parked for students to look inside.

Thomas said the day was meant to teach the importance of public safety throughout the community, starting with the youngest.
