Ocean City Fire Dept. Brings on New Off-season Paramedic Crew

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md.- A new off-season paramedic crew will help the Ocean City Fire Department ensure fast response times during emergencies.

Fire Chief Richard Bowers said there were 44 instances last year when a crew was not immediately available because they were on another call. All calls were answered.

"During the shoulder season here in Ocean City, it's grown where there's numerous events almost pretty much year-long," said Bowers.

The two-person, part-time crew has been funded from October 2019 to April 2020. Bowers said the additional unit is already making a difference.

"Actually, on the very first day that we had Medic 7 in service, we actually provided that additional capacity where it could have been during the day a couple of incidents we would not have had potentially a unit available," said Bowers.

There are five crews now in service.

Bowers said the department will continue to measure the incident responses with the new paramedic crew in service.

The data will be collected at the end of April and reported back to Ocean City leaders with findings.
