Dozens Displaced After Rehoboth Beach Condo Fire Friday Morning

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - Early Friday morning, a fire destroyed the backside of Beach Haven condominiums in Rehoboth Beach.

Rehoboth Fire Units, Lewes Fire Department, Indian River Fire Company Sussex County EMS arrived at the scene to put on the fire. Following were Bethany Beach, Milton, Millsboro and Millville Fire Companies. Firefighters were on the scene for three hours before clearing.

"It started on the left hand side and then towards the end. It was mainly in the middle; they were having a tough time putting it out in the middle," said neighbor Charles Vandergrift.

The state fire marshal said the building has a partial sprinkler system, which means sprinklers are on the inside in living spaces, but not on the outside where the roof or balconies are. He said the sprinklers deployed inside, preventing the fire from moving inward.

The fire displaced over 20 people, including Edith Heath. When she evacuated her home, she left with almost nothing.

"Oh my goodness, I was freezing. Somebody gave me socks to put on; everything I have on is not even mine," said Heath. "I just never expected anything like this, they just did my floors in my place and had it all looking so nice and now it's just a mess again."

The Red Cross is assisting those who are displaced. Damages are estimated to be over  $1,000,000. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
