SALISBURY, Md. - Work is underway to redevelop the iconic Powell Building in downtown Salisbury.

The property was bought by development and construction company Gillis Gilkerson from the Wright family of Vernon Powell Shoes.

Half of the 45,000-square-foot building faces the downtown plaza on West Main Street. That side is a two-story retail space.

The other half of the building faces parking lot one, and that half is essentially a huge, empty warehouse.

Brad Gillis said the building will be transformed into a mixed-use space. He said the plan is to add 20 apartments and 20,000-square-feet of commercial space.

Gillis said the development company is currently looking for commercial renters, whether that be restaurants, retail or offices.

"Major employers and institutions in and around our downtown are consistently looking for amenities to attract talent and we believe the Powell Building will be a very important contribution toward that attraction of talent," Gillis said.

The goal is to have the redeveloped Powell Building open by summer 2020.
