DOVER, Del.- South State Street in Dover remains closed off to traffic after structural damage was discovered at a building in Downtown Dover on Sunday night, according to city officials.

Dover spokeswoman Kay Sass said on Monday the building, located at 304 S. State St., had been condemned after the city fire marshal found a section of front wall where multiple layers of bricks used a s a support wall had fallen.

City Fire Marshal Jason Osika also found several cracks within the remaining wall, leading to the building to be condemned, Sass said.

An exterior overhang was also damaged.

Sass said the Dover Fire Department, which responded to the building at about 6:15 p.m. Sunday, assisted one person with exiting the building and ensured that the gas and electric were secured.

The Red Cross is assisting one displaced resident.

South State Street was closed Sunday night between North Street and The Green due to safety concerns and the closure will remain in effect until further notice, Sass said.

City staff from the Planning and Inspections office are working with the building owner, his insurance company, and a structural engineer to ensure proper repairs are made to the exterior wall, she said. Once deemed safe, the road will be re-opened.
