Delaware State Police Reporting Spike in Deadly Crashes Across First State

Posted: Updated:

DELAWAR- Delaware State Police have seen a recent spike in fatal crashes across the entire state.  In conjunction with the Delaware Office of Highways Safety, the departments are working together to provide our citizens with a few traffic safety reminders.

Police said the majority of fatal crashes are attributed to some form of distracted driving.  This involves the driver failing to provide the proper time and attention to the roadway and to the task of driving.  Other high-risk behaviors of motorists include impaired driving, speeding, unsafe driving behaviors including the use of electronic devices and the failure of motorists and passengers alike to wear seat belts.

Data shows there have been 107 deaths as a result of vehicle crashes so far this year across the First State. That's up from 88 deaths during the same period last year.

DSP said there have been 46 deaths so far in New Castle County, 43 deaths in Sussex County, and 18 in Kent County.

"Sussex County is such a small county and there's so many people in a congested area down here. I bet most of the deaths were located down in this area, where we are now in Rehoboth and Lewes," said Stacy Lamotta, who lives in Sussex County.

"A majority of the fatal crashes are attributed to some form of distracted driving. As motorists, each of us can play a part by slowing down, leave enough time to arrive at our destination, limit distractions," said Rehoboth Beach Police Chief Keith Banks.

A local marching band full of students, of elementary school age, are getting ready to take the grand stage on the Redskins field this Sunday. When the Maple Elementary School Marching Band began, they were the only elementary school marching band in the state. And now they are continuing to receive national attention. Earlier this week, Sydney got a chance to catch to see how the students are preparing for their performance and learn about the achievements they've accomplished so far.
