Protest Outside Sussex County Council Meeting Tuesday Morning

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del.- Angola-area residents and others protested outside the Sussex County Council meeting Tuesday morning to draw attention from the council about their concerns.

The Sussex County Council deferred a vote on the KH Sussex LLC's conditional use application. The application would allow for a 7-Eleven convenience store on Route 24 and Angola Road. The protest's organizers voiced their concerns at the public hearing on Sept. 17 but they thought they could do more to convince the council members.

"Our purpose today is to draw attention to this, that [the 7-Eleven] is unneeded. There are already eight gas stations within 4.3 miles and it's unwanted," said Jens Wegscheieer, one of the protest organizers.

The conditional use application for the 7-Eleven was not on the council's agenda on Tuesday but protesters said they were there to get more attention from the public and council.

The council will open the record for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's impact report about how the gas station will affect nearby water. The public will then have five calendar days to review the report. The council will vote sometime after the report has been reviewed.
