Some in Seaford Frustrated With Front Street Bridge Closure

Posted: Updated:

SEAFORD, Del.- The Delaware Department of Transportation closed the bridge on Front Street in Seaford on Wednesday night for maintenance to the drawbridge.

The closure took place from 6 p.m. until midnight.

Even though this was only a nighttime closure, this comes on the heels of another extended closure this summer from June 17 until late August for replacement of the timber deck sidewalk and other repairs to the bridge.

Many locals who live in Seaford and frequently travel between Seaford and Blades have grown frustrated with DelDOT, with many wondering why this bridge was closed down again and maintenance was not conducted during the initial closure.

In a statement to WBOC, DelDOT said Wednesday night's closure was the result of previous work.

"The closure tonight is in order to add counter balance to the bridge. Any significant structural work on a drawbridge changes the weight of various elements of the bridge. Therefore in order to ensure the bridge mechanics are running efficiently and safely after such work, the bridge has to be re-balanced and counter balance may need to be added."

When asked why the work wasn't addressed when the bridge was closed for the entire summer, a DelDOT spokesperson said, "In our case, the re-balancing and counter balance installation can be done with DelDOT's in-house forces. So, in order to save the Department money we elected to do the re-balancing and counter balance installation after the completion of the work."

The closure time was selected by DelDOT to avoid heavy traffic and to not disrupt students who use the bridge to get home from school.

But some are still frustrated, saying they are growing more and more concerned with the sporadic opening and closing of all bridges in western Sussex, like the Woodland Ferry that was recently closed for maintenance for months, reopened and then closed again for warranty service.

Others have grown frustrated with what they feel is a lack of communication from DelDOT, and delays with other bridges in western Sussex like the Central Avenue Bridge in Laurel that was closed for over a year, and its opening date constantly changing.

People like Alan Cranston, owner of Every Fiber Coffee located in downtown Seaford, said of Wednesday night's closure, "They had three months to address these issues."

And commenting on the larger issue of the closing and reopening of bridges in western Sussex County, Cranston said, "There's very little communication and we just want all this to work right," he said.

While Cranston and others say they understand the need for maintenance, they are just hoping for better scheduling down the road from DelDOT.
