Pile of Roof Shingles Illegally Dumped Near Holly Lake Campsite

Posted: Updated:

MILLSBORO, Del.- The Delaware Department of Natural Resources is investigating who dumped roof shingles in a field that belongs to Holly Lake Camp in Millsboro.

Kenneth Hopkins manages the camp and found the pile Thursday at around 8 a.m. in the field the camp uses as an overflow parking lot. He said he and his employees are used to patrolling the area for trash as illegal dumping is not unfamiliar to the area.

"It's just an added expense that Holly Lakes is accruing every day that I'm sending my guys for labor. We're paying to pick up trash and stuff from inconsiderate people," said Hopkins.

Illegal dumping is a violation of state code. Fines start at $500 and can increase significantly for repeat offenses and if illegal dumping takes place in places like state parks or along byways.

Gov. Delaware John Carney told WBOC in a statement: "We launched our Keep DE Litter Free campaign this summer to encourage Delawareans and visitors to not litter, and to help protect our state's unique natural heritage. Dumping remains a problem in Sussex County, and it's a problem we should all confront. Sussex County government, and mayors across the county, have joined us in this effort through our Delaware Anti-Litter Alliance and we're thankful for their partnership. We live in a beautiful state. We should keep it that way."

Hopkins also noticed another person left more trash since he saw the shingles in the morning.
