DOVER, Del.- Dover International Speedway is removing 29,000 seats that surround the track, reducing the venue's maximum capacity in its grandstands to 54,000 fans.

Dover Motorsports CEO Mike Tatoian said the move was intended to help improve the experience for NASCAR fans who attend races at the Monster Mile. He noted sports venues across the country have experienced declines in attendance and the latest reduction in seating matches that trend.

"All stadiums now, whether they're NASCAR, NHL, NFL, Major League Baseball...as they're being built or renovated they're being built more intimate, with fewer seats," he said.

Seating capacity at the Monster Mile has periodically dropped over the years after peaking at 135,000 grandstand seats in 2001.

Two more NASCAR series races are scheduled to happen next year at the Monster Mile, though they are the final races left on a five-year contract.

Tatoian said he is optimistic about the track's future and discussions to continue holding races in Dover.
