Roundabout Construction Project Slowly Getting Underway in Salisbury

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Over the next couple of days, drivers in Salisbury will be noticing some traffic pattern changes at one downtown intersection. The roundabout project at the busy intersection of Riverside Drive, Carroll Street, Mill Street, and Camden Avenue is just getting underway.

Street signs are out as the project to build a 120-foot roundabout at that intersection is getting started. The project has been in the works for some time. A previous study found problems with the intersection, such as traffic backups to Route 50 and unsafe patterns on the bridge.

"We use that a lot. It's the only way to get from this side of town to the other side of town," Dan Harris of Salisbury said. He's skeptical the project will help.

"There's a lot of space there, a lot of intersection, there's like three spaces so maybe three roundabouts but I don't know if one roundabout's going to do much," Harris added.

Though, some neighbors said they're hopeful a roundabout will alleviate some of the backups.

"I don't think they would go to all the expense and trouble of doing it if it wasn't going to make some improvement," Meg Lauridsen of Salisbury said. "Short term during construction, it's a trade off, actually it's a little bit of an inconvenience. But long term, I think it's definitely going to be an improvement. Can't be any worse."

In the meantime, drivers said they'll consider changing their routes, once construction ramps up.

"There's so many other ways to get out to Route 50 or out west of Salisbury and I think short term, people might just have to change some habits and find other ways to go," Lauridsen said.

Because the project is still in its early stages, the city said drivers won't be seeing any big changes to the traffic patterns for a least a couple of days.
