MILFORD, Del.- Delaware Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons on Friday announced a $750,000 grant award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to three organizations in Sussex County.
The money was awarded to CHEER Senior Services, La Red Health Center and Educational Health Resources International (EHRI), the nonprofit arm of Nationwide Healthcare Services at the Milford Wellness Village. Over the next three years, state officials said the organizations will be working to recruit and train volunteers who deliver meals to monitor and provide wellness services to senior citizens who are unable to access those services.
"Why don't we train some of the folks, who are delivering meals on wheels when they go visit an elderly person, to be able to do some elementary, basic checks to make sure someone is doing okay," said Carper.
State officials said the goal of the program is to be replicated in other parts of Delaware and then across the nation.
