LAUREL, Del.- October marks six months since an EF2 tornado ripped through parts of Sussex County. One of the hardest hit areas was Seaford Road in Laurel where several homes saw major damage.

Today, a lot of debris and downed trees have been cleared. Property cleanup companies are still working to remove trees and debris from some backyards.

"We had nine trees down in the yard. Our whole front porch was ripped off. About half of the back roof was ripped off. Our garage was collapsed due to a tree falling on it," said Robert Trout, who lives on Seaford Road. He and his wife just moved back into their house after six months.

There are still a few houses sitting covered in tarps and boarded up. Other homes are still undergoing repairs.

Neighbors said it has been a very slow recovery process dealing with insurance companies and adjusters.

"It was from your adjuster coming here assessing the damage. The biggest issue we had was the house was not built to today's code so fighting with the insurance company to do the proper upgrades," said Trout.

Laurel Mayor John Schwed said nine homes were condemned because of damage from the tornado.

However, he said there was not enough damage to qualify for federal assistance.

Affected neighbors said they were very grateful to see local companies and organizations step up and help with recovery efforts.
