Service Dog Falls in Line of Duty, Owner in Need of Replacement

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - Yadier the Service Dog was trying to get help for Diann Jones after their car accident when he was struck by another car. Jones is now raising money for a new service dog.

Diann Jones is a triple negative breast cancer survivor. Yadier helped her with a variety of daily tasks over the past few years.

"He was able to do things like go upstairs, retrieve my medicine for me," Jones says. "He would help me with various things, so if I dropped something he would pick it up for me so I didn't get dizzy and fall down."

Yadier was born on February 4th, 2016. The car accident happened on October 13th, 2019.

"We were traveling on Route 5," Jones says. "Previous to the accident I got really nauseous and dizzy and that's the last thing I remember until I woke up in Christiana Hospital."

Jones's says her fiance, Carrie Caldwell, remembers what she cannot from the accident. Caldwell says Jones was overwhelmed with nausea.

"Within a matter of seconds, I yelled Diann and we had swerved across the oncoming lane and smacked directly into a telephone poll," says Caldwell.

Caldwell says the accident happened around Route 5 and Forest Road and that when Yadier was found, he was in front a few nearby houses, meaning that he had likely been running to get help. She also says that Yadier was struck by a driver who ignored the men directing traffic away from the accident.

Jones is now raising money through GoFundMe. Click here to donate.

"The way that I obtained Yadi and the way that I'm actually getting his replacement is through purchasing another puppy, who is from a breeding pair, who has previous history of having other service dogs through other litters," says Jones.

The new puppy is a brown standard poodle named Camo. Jones is hoping to raise $4,000 to buy Camo and pay for vet bills and training.

Jones and Caldwell are still searching for the man who hit Yadier.
