Bay Bridge Construction Will Continue Through Thanksgiving Week

Posted: Updated:
SALISBURY, Md - If you will be on the road this Thanksgiving, you'll want to allow a lot of extra time if you are heading over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
Maryland transportation officials say drivers should plan for "major delays."
Work on the westbound span of the bridge will not stop, meaning drivers may run into traffic backups.
The thought of being stuck in traffic has some people rethinking their travel plans.
"It's just too much trouble, it's piled up and they're picking the wrong time of the year to do this kind of work."
The decision to work on the bridge over the holidays comes after Gov. Larry Hogan ordered state officials to speed up the two-year project.
Cleveland Rippons, who has family flying into Baltimore, is urging them to fly into Salisbury instead to avoid all the traffic.
"Especially when time is such a precious aspect during the time of the year, you don't want to waste time," he said.
Emerson Nichols says he's driving across the Bay Bridge, no matter what, with a goal already mapped out.
"I plan on leaving earlier to avoid the traffic."
Transportation officials are urging drivers to plan ahead by traveling outside the busy travel times.
