Salisbury Mayor Day Delivers Annual State of the City Address

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury Mayor Jake Day delivered his fourth State of the City address Wednesday night, highlighting the work and accomplishments of the last year.

Day says the address is a celebration.

"You lose track of time in these jobs," Day says. "And I think in general, in a city with a lot of things changing and a lot of things happening, there's rarely time to reflect."

Day's presentation focuses on a number of initiatives helping the city grow, including park and road projects like the Riverside roundabout and downtown construction.

"A year ago, it had just started the second half, they had just crossed the halfway point so now we're three quarters of the way done with that," Day says.

He also praised the Salisbury Police Department for the city's progress on crime.

"We've seen a seven percent decline in crime the last year," Day says. "Last year was our record low in history. So this year is also shaping up to be our record."

The address comes days before the municipal election, when people will be voting for the mayor's seat. Day's challenger, Wayne King, has taken a stance on crime and said in a past forum that he does not believe crime is going down in Salisbury.

Aside from the city projects and statistics, Day highlighted the things others have done on their own, like the murals painted on buildings around the area.

"There's a lot of good that's happened this year. Some of it is easily quantifiable and some of its more sort of community pride," Day said.

Day's address also included 2018 events like the Salisbury Marathon and National Folk Festival, youth initiatives like the Truitt Street Community Center, and infrastructure improvements like the wastewater treatment plant.
