Search Committee Takes Look at Candidates for Dover Police Chief Job

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- The City of Dover is taking steps forward on selecting a new police chief.

A search panel met Wednesday and got its first look at candidates for the top job.

Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen said the committee has to look at a number of qualities in candidates.

"It's a fair and balanced composition of requirements to get the best qualified chief of police for the City of Dover: a leader and someone who can relate well to our community," Christiansen said.

The mayor said he would like for a final candidate's name to be put forward for discussion in December.

The committee held its meeting amid news first reported by WBOC last week, that the city was being sued by veteran officer Capt. David Spicer, who claims he was passed over for the police chief job in 2017 because he is white and the person who got the job, Deputy Chief Marvin Mailey, is black.

Mailey retired from the department earlier this year, which has led the city to search  for his replacement.
