SLAUGHTER BEACH, Del. - Dispatchers initially sent Milton firefighters to the wrong address during a fire earlier this week but corrected it almost immediately.
Joseph Thomas, director of the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center in Georgetown, explained the dispatcher who received the 911 call entered in a Bay Avenue address. The first address on the dispatcher's computer screen was Bay Avenue Milton, instead of Bay Avenue in Slaughter Beach.
Thomas told WBOC the mistake was noticed by another dispatcher. The correct address was relayed to the Milton fire department within 70 seconds of the 911 call.
Milton's assistant fire chief, Chad Clendaniel, told WBOC fire trucks arrived at the scene within 12 minutes. The other fire companies soon followed.
Clendaniel said he believes the confusion did not hinder their response time.
