Cabin Floats Away After Heavy Rain and Wind

Posted: Updated:

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va.- A well known cabin on Chincoteague Island was ripped off its pilings following the heavy rain and wind Delmarva experienced a few days ago. Town officials say the cabin sat on land several years back, but due to beach erosion the cabin now sits in the water.

Officials say it is owned by a local man and was used for recreational use for many years by his family, but was uninhabited during the time of the storm.

The cabin was not a historical landmark, but something many locals say they saw whenever they were on the water, especially during local boat tours. Many locals are sad to see the cabin go.

People like Dan Davis, owner of Captain Dans Around the Island Tours, says the cabin is something he frequently pointed out to people who experienced his tours.

“It was a staple of every one of my trips,” he said. “I’m not sure of all the details but the cabin was for sale for a few years.”

Officials say the cabin was ripped off its pilings sometime on Thursday night, with a lot of the cabin itself still in tact.

A spokesperson from the Chincoteague Coast Guard says, “The last sighting was Friday evening offshore of Wallops Island. A broadcast notice to mariners went out over VHF Friday morning and continued through the evening.”

The Coast Guard says there is no current plan to salvage what’s left of the cabin, but many locals and tourists say they are sad to see it go.
