Trial Resumes Monday for Former Dover School Custodian Charged With Murder

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- The murder trial for a former elementary school custodian from Dover is set to continue Monday with the defense's case being presented to jurors.

Fifty-four-year-old Rodney West is charged with first-degree murder last year in the fatal shooting of Derrick Combs, 39, in the parking lot of Towne Point Elementary School in Dover.

Prosecutors and defense attorney Joe Hurley have acknowledged West opened fire on Combs, though Hurley argues his client was defending himself from an "ambush" by Combs.

The incident happened about 10 p.m. on Aug. 28, 2018, as West was leaving work.

Lawyers on both sides of the case have said the shooting appears to stem from text messages of a sexual nature exchanged by West and Combs' wife.
