Former Dover School Custodian Testifies in Own Murder Trial

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- A former school custodian accused of murder took the stand in his own trial Monday.

Rodney West faces murder charges in the August 2018 shooting death of Derrick Combs in the parking lot of Towne Point Elementary School in Dover, where West worked.

While on stand, West said Combs had been consistently harassing him via text messages and stalking prior to their after-hours confrontation in the parking lot.

Lawyers on both sides of the case said the shooting stemmed from sexual text messages exchanged between West and Combs' wife.

West's defense attorney, Joe Hurley, has argued the custodian was defending himself and thought Combs may have been armed.
