Milford Traffic Stop Leads to Gun and Drug Arrest

MILFORD, Del.- Authorities say a traffic stop in Milford led to the arrest of a man on multiple firearm and drug charges. 

Milford police said that on Oct. 29, an officer stopped a Nissan Sentra for an equipment violation in the area of Route 113 northbound and Warner Road.

Police said that upon making contact with the driver, 22, of Lincoln, the officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car.  Investigators said that when Santiago was questioned about the marijuana, he admitted that it was under the seat. Police said Santiago also disclosed that he had a firearm underneath the seat as well, but did not have a carry concealed permit for the weapon.

Santiago was asked to step out of the Nissan, where he was detained for further investigation. According to police, the officer then conducted a search of the car and located an unloaded handgun and a clear plastic bag containing suspected marijuana, which field tested positive for marijuana. The officer also located drug paraphernalia in the car, police said. 

Santiago was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon a firearm; possession, purchase, own or control a deadly weapon by person prohibit who also possesses controlled substance; possess/consume marijuana other than personal use quantity; and possession of drug paraphernalia marijuana related- civil violation.

Santiago was also issued a traffic summons for operating a vehicle with improper window tinting and failure to have insurance identification in possession.

Santiago had a presentment through the Justice of the Peace Court 2 where he was released on his own recognizance and ordered to appear in the Kent County Court of Common Pleas at a later date for a preliminary hearing.
