WEST OCEAN CITY, Md.- The Maryland State Highway Administration has started work to improve a busy intersection along Route 50 in West Ocean City.
SHA is adding a second left turn lane from US 50 eastbound to MD 589. This new lane will extend through the turn and up MD 589 to Ocean Downs Lane.
SHA said average daily traffic along MD 589 exceeds 20,000 vehicles during the summer.
This project will ease congestion and improve efficiency by moving more left-turning vehicles through the intersection with each traffic signal cycle.
This project will also improve safety by reducing the incidence of left-turning vehicles stacking out into the US 50 main travel lane.
"Coming from somebody who sits at that light every single day, you'll sit there and watch it turn green to yellow to red multiple times before you get to make the turn," said driver Jamie Parker.
Construction is just getting started in November with completion expected by summer 2020.
A $3 million contract was awarded to David A. Bramble of Chestertown.
