Delaware Senate Confirms New Chief Justice, First Black Associate Justice

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- Delaware's State Supreme Court unanimously confirms two new members Thursday, including the first African-American justice on the First State's highest court.

Senators voted 21 to 0 to confirm Justice Collins J. Seitz as the newest Chief Justice. Vice-Chancellor Tamika Montgomery-Reeves was also confirmed unanimously as the newest associate justice.

Seitz has served on the State's Supreme Court since 2015. The life-long Delawarean is a graduate of Tower Hill and has been a member of the Delaware Bar since 1983. Montgomery-Reeves will fill the open seat to become the state's first ever African-American to serve on the Delaware Supreme Court.

Senate Pro Tem David McBride said, "I can say with confidence that today’s nominees are some of the best we have ever considered. I was supremely impressed by their experience, their commitment to the law and justice in this state, and their testimony in the Senate chamber today."

Governor John Carney thanked the Senate for confirming both of his nominations. Governor Carney highlighted their sense of justice and experience as top reasons for the nomination.

The moves come immediately following the October 31 retirement of Chief Justice Leo Strine, who had served in the top seat since 2014.
