PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- A big crowd gathered at University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne on Monday morning to honor a living icon who served the U.S. proudly.

During a special Veterans Day event, Col. Charles McGee delivered remarks  to a crowd of students, neighbors, and elected community leaders.

McGee is one of the last surviving original Tuskegee Airmen.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American pilots in United States military history.

"Our sole purpose is to preserve the history for what it's meant to the country and motivate our youth to get involved in youth aviation career opportunities," said McGee.

Also recognized was Sgt. Harry Quinton, another original Tuskegee Airman and Salisbury native.

"I never thought I would be in this position to be honored by people," said Quinton.
