SALISBURY, Md.- Wicomico County honored local veterans today with a moving ceremony.
The event started at 11:00 a.m. with the Salisbury Baptist Academy Choir. Dozens of veterans and their families came together during the event.
"I think it's outstanding that we have so many people specially in the community that want to support our veterans," said Melvin Smullen, Vietnam War veteran from Mardella Spring.
The event was organized by the Wicomico War Veterans Memorial Committee.
Some of the veterans in attendance believe today is a day to remind younger generations of the importance of thanking those who serve us.
"I just want everyone to remember to to support those people who are coming back today," says David Wharton, Vietnam War Veteran from Salisbury.
Alongside his wife Barbara, who is also a veteran, they often visit airports to welcome soldiers that are coming back from deployment.
"This is something the Vietnam veterans didn't have. We didn't feel welcome when we came back home, So Barbara and I we go to the airport and greet those veterans to make them feel welcome when they come back home," said David.
The ceremony closed with a prayer by Rev. Den Delfino.
