Posted: Updated:

MILLSBORO, Del.- Nov. 11 is a day for the nation to come together as proud Americans to salute veterans, service men and women. American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro held its annual outdoor flag ceremony by paying tribute to the flag and those who raised their hands to defend our country.

The ceremony was honored by the post and local dignitaries. The Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club and representatives from the Warrior Community Connect were at the ceremony to discuss the partnership formed by these organizations to support local veterans. The ceremony included a performance from Taps and a 21-gun salute by the Color Guard. Members of the community gathered at the American Legion to take part in a prayer service, and sing the National Anthem. The American Legion presented a fallen solider table in tribute to prisoners of war and those service members who have fallen in combat or gone missing.

Korean War Veteran Walter Koopman says no matter how old he is, he will keep supporting his country.

"I will continue to serve even though I am in my mid eighties. It is my duty to do this for my fellow men," said Koopman.

The Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club placed flags in the ground for the men and women who have fought for our freedom. The US Department of Veteran Affairs says in the state of Delaware there are over 70,000 veterans. Many veterans that return home may cope with depression, PTSD, anxiety, or suffer from a traumatic brain injury. Colleen Johnson, a caregiver for the Elizabeth Dole Foundation says no matter the day, you can always support veterans by simply being there.

Thomas Johnson, a chief warrant officer in the Delaware National Guard, was joined on Monday with many service members and World War II veterans. Johnson said he is honored to stand side by side with these heroes.

The American Legion Post 28 hosts a number of events year-round.
