Delaware Sisters Creating School Library in Ghana

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Two Kent County sisters are taking the power of reading and helping others across the globe.

Eight-year-old Hailey Willard and 13-year-old Zaria Hathorn starting sharing their love for literacy with their popular Facebook page. The girls read bedtime stories via Facebook Live so no child goes without a bedtime story. Now, the girls are working to build a library at a Montessori school in Ghana. Thanks to Browseabout Books' $5,000 donation and tons of books, they are one step closer.

"It makes me feel loved," says Zaria. "[People] are actually helping us reach our goal."

Browseabout manager Susan Kehoe says a number of publishers donated the books for the girls without hesitation.

"I love when children are excited about reading and want to share their passion with other children and adults," Kehoe explains. "We are so thrilled when we see kids with books in their hands. It really is why we do what we do."

The sisters are still raising money so they can send the books to Ghana and then visit the country next year. Eight-year-old Hailey says reading is important now and for when you grow up.

"Reading is good," she tells WRDE. "If you can't read, you can't get a job and if you don't read you won't get a good one either."

The sisters were recently featured on the Rachael Ray Show. To learn more about Hailey and Zaria, click here.
