Delaware State University DREAMers Visit Washington on Historic Day for DACA

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, DC .- Hundreds of DREAMers protested outside the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, while the justices heard the oral arguments in the case that will decide the future of DACA.

“IF I LOSE DACA IT WOULD BE A TRAGIC FOR ME,” says Carlos Cabrera Blanco, a student at Delaware State University.

Cabrera Blanco was born in Mexico and moved to the U.S. when he was 5-years-old. He says living without DACA is living in fear.

“IT'D MEAN THAT THERE'S  A POSSIBILITY THAT I'D BE DEPORTED AND GO TO MEXICO, A COUNTRY THAT I'm REALLY NOT FAMILIAR WITH,” he says.

Cabrera Blanco is one of the 30 DSU students that traveled to Washington on Thursday to be part of this historic day.

"FOR ME BEING A DREAMer IS LIKE LIVING IN A LIMBO BECAUSE WE DON'T KNOW WHAT'S going to happen WITH the DACA PROGRAM,” says Shannon Mendez, who also attends DSU.

They left early in the morning to spend the day in the nation’s capital.

“The trip was worth it because now we’re here supporting our community today,” said Mendez.

Kevin Noriega, head of the DREAMers program at Delaware State University. says they represent an asset for the school and the state.

"THEY ARE DETERMINED, THEY'RE DRIVEN, THEY'RE resilient, THEY'RE GOOD AT EVERYTHING THAT THEY DO AND THEY DON'T DESERVE ANYTHING ELSE BUT TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO WORK ON THEIR FUTURE,” says Noriega.

A local marching band full of students, of elementary school age, are getting ready to take the grand stage on the Redskins field this Sunday. When the Maple Elementary School Marching Band began, they were the only elementary school marching band in the state. And now they are continuing to receive national attention. Earlier this week, Sydney got a chance to catch to see how the students are preparing for their performance and learn about the achievements they've accomplished so far.
