Dover Narrows Police Chief Search

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- The Dover Police Chief Selection committee on Tuesday narrowed its search for the city's next top cop to eight names.

The remaining names come from a list of 22 "qualified candidates," according to Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen, who serves on the panel. He said the interviews are being extended to the remaining eight candidates for the job and that he hopes to have a final candidate from the sampling of a nationwide search ready for a confirmation vote next month.

"We are still shooting for early December. If we don't have it at the first council meeting in December, we'll have a special meeting before the end of December to appoint a new chief," he said.

The city is seeking to replace Marvin Mailey, who retired earlier this year.

Hiring a police chief has not gone smoothly for Dover in recent years. The city and several officials are currently facing a federal lawsuit from a senior officer claiming he was discriminated during the previous hiring process for police chief because he is white and Mailey, who is black, was appointed to the role.
