Milford City Manager Resigns, Citing Rift With Mayor and Council

MILFORD, Del.- Milford's city manager on Wednesday said he is resigning from his post, citing growing differences between himself and the city's elected leaders over visions for the future of the municipality.

City Manager Eric Norenberg said he will officially leave Milford's government on Dec. 31. He said discussions about a change in his position had been ongoing for some time between himself, council members, and Mayor Archie Campbell.

"We decided it was a good time for me to move on and let the city council make a decision about hiring a new city manager," he said.

Norenberg said he respected the positions on Milford's future held by mayor and council. He acknowledged they set policy for the city and they would be able to hire someone that better fits their vision of how the city should develop in the coming years.

"I'm very proud of what I've accomplished here with the city. We have a great team of city employees. We've got done the Downtown Development District and a lot of projects that have improved the overall economy," he said.

Campbell declined to explain any specific areas in which he and council members had significant differences with Norenberg, but suggested city leaders hoped to find a new manager who would better address their vision for growth in the municipality.

"I think Eric did OK but I have higher expectations of things," he said.

Campbell also suggested turnover atop city government in recent years --- both in his election to mayor and recent additions to council --- may have influenced the decision.

"A little more progressive ideas---I think that's where the problem is," he said. "I'm a very progressive person and I like change and...I think I'll just leave it that way."
