Multiple Explosives Found Outside Delaware Home

Posted: Updated:

NEWARK, Del.- Authorities say explosive devices have been removed from outside a Delaware home and a person of interest has been taken into custody.

Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio said it was “kind of surprising” to find the devices in plain view Wednesday morning at the home in the Hillside Heights neighborhood in Newark.

Chionchio says the investigation began over the weekend when a man called police about unexplained damage outside of his home. Investigators determined it was caused by a homemade explosive device.

Ten homes were evacuated for several hours Wednesday while bomb squad robots removed the devices. Other residents in the neighborhood were told to shelter in place. No injuries were reported.

Ten homes were evacuated, according to the State Fire Marshal. Several people were also asked to take shelter in place while New Castle County Police rendered the devices safe. People returned to their homes around 9:30 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Chionchio said one person was taken into custody on an arrest warrant out of Pennsylvania, however, no arrests have been made in connection to this investigation.

Investigators are currently following up on additional leads, according to Chionchio.

The Christiana Fire Company and New Castle County Paramedics protected the investigators while handling the explosive devices.
