Rehoboth Beach Church Searches for New Location for Nativity Scene

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- After a nativity scene in Rehoboth Beach struck controversy last Christmas, the location for this year's nativity scene is up in the air.

Saint Edmond Church in Rehoboth Beach was ordered to take down the creche last year after the city of Rehoboth Beach said religious displays weren't allowed on public property. The church had been setting up the creche near the bandstand.

Last year the city offered the church to set up the creche outside the chamber of commerce. The church denied the offer and said no this year when the mayor made the same offer. Mayor Paul Kuhns said the chamber of commerce location is better than downtown.

"It's probably one of the most prominent places in the city as you come in," said Kuhns.

Father Cocco of Saint Edmond Roman Catholic Church said the circle is the center of the city, where everyone celebrates Christmas. He said he believes Christmas isn't possible without Jesus.

"The real and true meaning of Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ. That's not debatable," said Father Cocco.

Father Cocco said he would like the nativity scene to be in front of Grotto's Pizza like it was last year, but they haven't received permission yet.
