Updated: Teachers Injured After Student Fight at Parkside High School

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.– A press conference with Wicomico County officials addressed a fight that happened at Parkside High School in Salisbury late Friday morning.

Three teachers were injured following the fight between students at the school. The incident happened at around 11 a.m. Friday.

According to Lt. Tim Robinson of the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, two students got into a fight, which escalated to something bigger.  Another teacher was injured in an unrelated incident.

All three were taken by ambulance to Peninsula Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.

In a press conference held Friday afternoon, Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis, Wicomico County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Donna Hanlin and Wicomico County State's Attorney Jamie Dykes said they're working together to put an end to these incidents.

"We take these incidents very seriously, like this one today, they will not be tolerated," said Hanlin.

"It takes longer than it does to do a fast post on social media, these are community issues that will require the entire community engagement for us to fix," said Dykes.

Lewis said some of the solutions moving forward might include removing students that continue to participate in violent incidents.

"There is a number of kids that come solely to be disruptive, solely to wreck havoc, solely to terrorize other kids," said Lewis.  "Those are the kids we're going to identify, and get them out of the schools."

Hanlin said they will use additional funding received through the Kirwin Commission to work with a third-party organization to evaluate how the schools can prevent these incidents from happening.
