Juntos Delaware Aims to Inspire Hispanic Community Members to Become Leaders

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, De.- Empowering communities to create leaders, that's the goal of Juntos Delaware, a fellowship that provides Advocacy Training for Latinos across the First State.

The free program focuses in education, teaching a group of 17 engaged community members how to start the change their communities need.

"We're regular people, we're community members we just need to learn the information that might seem difficult but it's not," says Erika Gutierrez, who runs the program.

They meet once a week at the Dover Public Library. Gutierrez says the focus of Juntos Delaware is to explain to participants how education system works and how they can create change to help their communities.

"It goes over identity, it goes over social movements, it goes over what is our role and our commitment to our community why is important that we know the rules of the education game," says Gutierrez.

The 10-week program has brought together people from all over Delmarva. Osmar Diaz travels from Easton, Md., each week to be part of the class.

"There are things that I see in my community that I would like to change. This class has given me the tools to learn what it takes to make those changes. Who to talk to in the school boards and what resources are out there for us," says Diaz.

Juntos Delaware will be hosting open discussions in Delaware's three counties. Organizers hope to bring back the program next year.
