West Side VFD Chief Passes Away

BIVALVE, Md.- John Harold Wilson, who was the chief of the West Side Volunteer Fire Department, which serves the Bivalve area of Wicomico County, died Tuesday. He was 63. 

According to his obituary, in addition to his role as chief, Wilson also was a member of the West Side VFD's marine rescue operations team. 

In February 1983, Wilson joined the Salisbury Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter at Station 2 where he served as president. In February 1990, he joined the Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Company where he became a paramedic and served as deputy chief. For the past 20 years, Wilson served with the West Side VFD as a firefighter, paramedic and a member of the dive team. 

At the time of his death, Wilson was the West Side VFD chief and a member of its marine rescue operations. He also served the West Side VFD as assistant chief and ambulance captain.

Wilson began serving as a career firefighter with the Salisbury Fire Department in 1987 and later as a career firefighter paramedic until his retirement in 2003. Since his retirement from Salisbury, Wilson served as a career firefighter paramedic with the West Side and Hebron volunteer fire departments. 

A fireman’s funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. the West Side Volunteer Fire Department where friends may visit from 12pm – 2pm. Interment will follow in Bivalve Cemetery. Rev. Harry Hetz. will officiate.
