Lighthouse Christian School Honors Female Veterans

DAGSBORO, Del.- Lighthouse Christian School in Dagsboro spent Friday making sure Delaware's female veterans felt special.

The school held its annual Veterans' Day tribute, where students sang, read essays, played videos about each branch of the services, and gave each veteran in attendance a handmade craft.

"We wanted to find a way to reach out to the veterans in our community and give honor where honor is due," says Language Arts teacher Jackie Jones. "We pride ourselves as Christians that these individuals have sacrificed a lot for our country and we wanted a way to kind of pay it back to them."

The event's theme changes each year, though director Terri Menoche says the lesson is eternal.

"It's to instruct our students on the importance of Veterans Day," she says. "It's not just a day off but why we celebrate Veterans Day."

This year's program honored female veterans. One--Carol Holtmeyer--has been attending the ceremony for years. She said participating was an honor.

"These kids are amazing. They do a great job," she says. "A lot of the children have veterans in their families and it's an honor for them as well as it's an honor for us."

A Hero's Welcome Delaware founder Rosely Robinson says seeing women like Holtmeyer be recognized is well-deserved.

"There's over two million women veterans and they are still fighting for different healthcare and different benefits that they should be getting," she tells WRDE. "But slowly we will be getting there. They've been overlooked for too many years."

Overlooked no longer--at least at Lighthouse Christian School.

"They are so equal as the men," says student Natasha Richter. "They deserve all the credit as well."
