Future of Parade That Parodied Border Crisis Still Undecided

Posted: Updated:

MIDDLETOWN, Del. (AP)- The future of a parade that caused controversy in a Delaware town is uncertain as the mayor says proposed guidelines would be unconstitutional.

News outlets report no decision was made about the 2020 Hummer’s Parade on Monday night at a council meeting in Middletown. Mayor Kenneth Branner Jr. says the town’s solicitor determined that a citizens committee’s recommendations could violate freedom of speech rights.

The town has been grappling with how to regulate the annual parade on New Year’s Day after criticism over a float portraying children in cages at the U.S. border.

The mayor says the town solicitor will suggest changes to proposed parade guidelines ahead of another public meeting on Dec. 18.
