State Grant to Help Advertise 2020 Census in Wicomico County

SALISBURY, Md. - Local governments are stepping up efforts to make sure everyone is counted in next year's census.

For months, the Salisbury-Wicomico County Complete Count Committee has been reaching out to the public about the importance of participation in the census.

A recently awarded $20,000 state grant will also help promote the 2020 census in various media outlets.

County leaders said reaching hard-to-count communities like children, the elderly, and homeless and minority populations is always a challenge, but reaching those communities and getting a complete count is critical.

"First of all, it involves how we elect our legislative officials. It involves those critical program as they relate to services for our community residents whether that be for education, school construction, whether it's in regards to Meals on Wheels," said Lori Carter, Planning, Zoning and Community Development director for Wicomico County.

The census is different from years past because people can now respond by mail, phone, or online.

Carter said people should be looking out for a first notification from the US Census Bureau to respond online to arrive by mail sometime in March.
