Nativity Scene Will Not Be Set Up in Georgetown's Circle After a Decade

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del.- The Georgetown Circle will no longer host the nativity scene starting this holiday season. The changes come after the town of Georgetown did it's annual review of permit applications and policies.

The town of Georgetown says they are no longer having posters, figurines, or signs put in the circle due to safety issues. Georgetown now prohibits unattended structures or displays. The town defines an unattended structure as things placed on the circle that have been left or set there for over a period of time. Town Manager Eugene Dvornick says placing these precautions are needed to avoid accidents. Dvornick says these unattended displays have tendencies to fall off poles or be blown into the street.

"It is more important if the wind kicks up and there's not anyone there with the unattended items. For example, if the items blow out to the traffic lanes and the circle is pretty busy from a traffic standpoint," explains Dvornick.

Dvornick says anything that is co-sponsored with the town of Georgetown will be exempted such as the display of flags for heroes.

The nativity scene has been set up in the circle for over a decade. This year the town says the creche falls underneath the category of unattended displays which would include the nativity scene.

Charlie Koskey owns Chardon LTD. Jewelers in Georgetown. His store has been located right on the circle for over 20 years. Koskey does not think the nativity scene will cause any problems.

"I don't see how it could be a safety concern for anyone because the nativity scene is rather short. I believe that it is quite easy to see over it while your driving a vehicle or as a pedestrian," says Koskey.

The new unattended structure policy is in effect immediately. The town of Georgetown says they are not against the nativity scene and there is no religious component to this new policy. Members of the town says this policy applies to all unattended structures that are not co-sponsored.
