SMYRNA, Del. - The Delaware Department of Correction said Friday that a an inmate died while at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center.

Authorities said 67-year-old Norris E. Durham was in the prison infirmary Thursday for an unrelated medical condition when he started having chest plains. The DOC said medical staff was taking his vitals when Durham lost consciousness. Staff then called 911 and began chest compressions before emergency medical personnel continued additional life-saving measures. However, DOC officials said emergency crews were unable to revive him and Durham died at JTVCC.

Durham was serving a life sentence plus 30 years for rape and kidnapping since October 24, 1981.

Durham's body was turned over to the Division of Forensic Science to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. As the investigation continues, the DOC said preliminary reports find no suspicious circumstances or foul play.
