SELBYVILLE, Md.- Delaware State Police have announced the arrest of a man wanted for attempting to strangle his ex-girlfriend before chasing after her and her boyfriend with a gun in Selbyville.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, troopers went to a home in the 35000 block of Mount Herman Circle in Delmar, Del., where 37-year-old Dionederik R. Godwin, of Bishopville, Md., was taken into custody. Godwin was transported to Troop 4 where he was charged with the following offenses:

  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
  • Strangulation
  • Aggravated menacing
  • Endangering the welfare of a child (five counts)
  • Offensive touching (two counts)

Godwin was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $46,750 secured bond.

Police said the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Hickory Tree Apartments in Selbyville.

According to investigators, Godwin went to his 31-year-old ex-girlfriend’s home where he got into an argument with her and her 40-year-old boyfriend.

Troopers said Godwin entered the home where he made contact with the male victim first and began to challenge him, and then proceeded to pull out a handgun.

Godwin then proceeded to push his ex-girlfriend and tried to strangle her, police said. Troopers said both victims were able to leave the home when Godwin proceeded to chase after the male victim while displaying the gun.  Godwin then swung the firearm and subsequently struck the male victim before driving away, police said.

During this incident, there were five children in the home, ranging from ages 4 to 13.  There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.
