Lewes Man Arrested for Stealing Thousands of Dollars Worth of Jewelry

LEWES, Del.- Delaware State Police have arrested a Lewes man accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from a woman's home.

Troopers say they responded to a report of a burglary at a home in the Plymouth Court, Rolling Meadows area of Lewes for a report of a burglary. A 62-year-old woman said someone had stolen multiple pieces of jewelry and cash while she was away on a trip.

Police say an investigation proved 34-year-old Matthew D. Long was an acquaintance of the woman and had entered her home through an unlocked back door. Investigators said say that once inside, Long took several pieces of jewelry valued at around $7,000 as well as some cash.

A few days later, police then visited Long at his home on the 22000 block of John J. Williams Highway in Lewes, who reportedly refused to answer the door. Troopers finally entered Long's home and a struggled ensued, according to police. Long was finally arrested with further incident. No one was hurt in the incident.

Long was taken into custody and charged with burglary, theft, and resisting arrest. He was released on a $9,000 unsecured bond.
