USPS, The UPS Store and FedEx Holiday Shipping Deadlines

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- These are some of the busiest days of the year for package delivery companies. The deadlines to deliver presents by Christmas are quickly approaching. The United States Postal Service alone expects to deliver 200 million packages from Dec. 16-22.

Barb Hitchens sent her daughter's Christmas present on its way Thursday. She says last year she waited until the week before Christmas.

"Things were delayed and arrived the week between Christmas and New Year's," she says.

United States Postal Service Supervisor in Rehoboth Beach, Andy Givens, says next week is the mail carrier's busiest of the entire year.

"If you're going to ship First Class we ask that you have it in by the 20th of December," says Givens. "If you're going to ship Priority Mail, we ask for the 21st and then Express is good up until the 23rd of December."

The UPS Store says customers have until Dec. 23 to ship presents Next Day Air and until Dec. 20 to ship them with Second Day Air. Those services are money-back-guaranteed with the exception of weather.

Seaford USPS Manager Laura Rogers recommends ground shipments be dropped off to them by the end of the week.

"We like people to get ground shipping out as soon as possible because of the volume of packages, especially with Amazon," she says. "If you're going from East Coast to West Coast, you want to give yourself plenty of time with a cushion."

Krystal Harrell of Berlin opts for that cushion. She stopped in The UPS Store today with a special surprise for her cousin in Smryna.

"I'm hoping for it to be there by Saturday or Monday," she says.

FedEx says its deadlines are Dec. 16 for ground, the 20th for 2-day shipping and the 23rd for Express Overnight. FedEx does offer same-day service on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in select markets.

In addition to meeting shipping deadlines, it's important to pack presents in sturdy new boxes without string or wrapping paper outside of the box.  Gift boxes with masking, cellophane, or duct tape are not reliable options.
