Bell Ringing Pup Becomes a Big Hit During the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- The captain of the Salvation Army - Lower Eastern Shore recruited a little extra help at the red kettles this year. Instead of one more pair of helping hands, it's four more paws.

Capt. Matt Trantham often brings his dog Rocky with him when he takes shifts to ring the bell. It's a tradition they've been doing for years.

"The Salvation Army has a lot of volunteer opportunities and being the Salvation Army captain, I'm called on just to fill in every once in a while when they have openings," Trantham says. "So, I try to make it fun and enjoyable and bring Rocky out with me."

Rocky's been a hit.

"They love to see him. They love getting kisses from him. He makes people smile," Trantham says.

Bringing Rocky is just one trick he uses to attract potential donors. Trantham also has a special Christmas music playlist and can even flip the bell in his hands.

"I love the Christmas spirit. I mean when I'm out here ringing the bell, I get to hear a lot of people who are in a great mood, loving the Christmas spirit, they love Christmas and being able to see the dog. It just kind of brightens peoples spirit,"  Trantham says.

Trantham has another dog at home and says he'll be coming along too, once he's old enough for the crowds.

He adds that it's never too late to volunteer. The Salvation Army will be ringing the bell until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Find out how you can help here.
