SALISBURY, Md.- A Salisbury man has been sentenced to more than 80 years behind bars in connection with a deadly shooting that happened outside the VFW on West Main Street in 2017.

According to the Wicomico County State's Attorney's Office, on Thursday, Dec. 12, 36-year-old Dionte Keith Dutton was sentenced to 83 years in the Division of Corrections for one count each of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, illegal possession of a regulated firearm and transporting a firearm in a vehicle.

A Wicomico County Circuit Court jury convicted Dutton on Oct. 7, 2019 of the aforementioned charges after a five-day jury trial. Judge S. James Sarbanes handed Dutton the maximum sentence allowed by law.

In May of this year, Sarbanes sentenced Dutton's co-defendant, 39-year-old Lee Richard Braboy, also of Salisbury, to life without the possibility of parole after he was convicted two months prior of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, 20 years for using a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, and 15 years for possessing the firearm after having been convicted of a disqualifying crime.

Sarbanes ordered that all sentences run consecutive.

On June 10, 2017, Jaquanta Walton was shot outside of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post located at 821 West Main St. in Salisbury. After the shooting, Walton was pronounced dead at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

Walton’s death was believed to be related to gang activity within the VFW earlier that evening.

Prosecutors said Walton was executed while engaging in a dice game in the parking lot of the VFW. None of the
witnesses present for the shooting contacted 911 and police received no calls for service from the VFW.

Police discovered Walton’s death only after Walton was dropped off at PRMC.

After an extensive investigation that spanned nearly a year, Dutton and Braboy were charged with the murder of Walton in May 2018.
